Terracotta Facade Panels: AFC TerraSlat by Tonality®

AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® terracotta facade panel — Southington Public Library, Southington CT
UNC SCHOOL OF ART – Winston-Salem, NC

Terracotta facades have defined institutional, civic, and commercial architecture for over a century — but traditional extruded terracotta panels carry weight, cost, and lead-time penalties that limit their use on modern projects. AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® solves this. Engineered from 100% natural materials, TerraSlat delivers the warmth, color depth, and architectural credibility of fired terracotta in a lightweight, cost-efficient panel system designed for ventilated rainscreen applications. Customizable in colors and layout patterns, with the highest level of fire safety and long-term sustainability, AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® is the terracotta facade reimagined for the commercial scale.

What is AFC TerraSlat by Tonality®?

AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® is a terracotta facade panel system supplied by American Fiber Cement, manufactured from 100% natural raw materials and engineered as a lightweight, cost-effective alternative to traditional extruded terracotta cladding. Where conventional terracotta panels rely on heavy clay custom extrusions, TerraSlat is produced as a slim-profile panel that delivers the visual character and material credibility of fired terracotta in a format that integrates with standard ventilated rainscreen attachment systems. AFC TerraSlat is readily available in the US in standard colors. Two of AFC TerraSlat's biggest advantages are scratch and graffiti resistance, due to its advanced surface glazing technology.

Color and layout customization

Custom color expression

AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® is available in a range of natural terracotta tones, with custom color matching available for larger projects. The natural raw materials and fired-finish process produce color depth and tonal variation characteristic of authentic terracotta — not a printed or coated surface treatment

Layout pattern flexibility

TerraSlat panels attach to a hook and rail system with no visible fasteners and can be specified in horizontal, vertical, or mixed-pattern layouts. Slats can even be installed at an angle giving limitless design options.

Sustainability built in

Manufactured from 100% natural materials, AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® is positioned for projects pursuing LEED, WELL, and other sustainability certifications. The lightweight panel format reduces embodied transportation impact compared to heavy extruded terracotta, and the material is fully recyclable at end of service life.

Where AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® is specified

Terracotta facades are used in five primary commercial application categories. AFC TerraSlat by Tonality® is engineered for each:

Educational facilities

Universities, K-12 schools, and research buildings specify terracotta for warmth, durability, and association with civic permanence. TerraSlat delivers terracotta character at the format and cost profile that institutional facilities budgets require.

Hospitality and hotel

Boutique and brand hospitality projects specify terracotta to convey craft, place, and material warmth. TerraSlat allows hospitality designers to use authentic terracotta without the weight and cost penalties of traditional extruded panels.

Mixed-use and multi-family

Mixed-use developments use terracotta to differentiate ground-floor retail elevations and upper-floor residential blocks. TerraSlat's flexible layout patterns and color customization support facade differentiation across mixed-use programs.

Civic and institutional

Libraries, museums, civic centers, and government buildings specify terracotta for material authenticity and lifecycle durability. TerraSlat brings the visual language of historic terracotta to contemporary civic facade design.

Sustainability-driven projects

LEED, WELL, and net-zero-targeted projects use TerraSlat for the combination of natural materials, lightweight transport profile, and end-of-life recyclability — supporting embodied carbon and lifecycle performance metrics.
